SPECIES OF FRESHWATER DOLPHIN IS NEAR ALL DISAPPEAR IN THE CATFISH ASIA
Irrawaddi Dolphin (Orcaella brevirostris) is sometimes confused with the beluga. It has a large melon and a very rounded head. Its dorsal fin is small while its ventral fins are large and highly mobile. Its color varies depending on the region between the dark gray and light gray. Its belly is mostly white. The largest specimen observed 2.75 cm tall but usually does not exceed 2m. Its weight varies between 115 to 130 kg.
This freshwater dolphin lives in the estuaries of some major rivers in northern Australia, southern Philippines to the north-eastern India but also in Southeast Asia is like Burma, Vietnam, Cambodia , Thailand and Laos.
In Thailand for example, only 7 specimens survive in Lake Songkhla in the south.
Several recent surveys have shown that dolphin populations declined dramatically Irrawaddi to such an extent that the species is endangered in the short term. The world population of mammalian sympathetic would be less than 300 specimens only.
