To register or not to register? New contributor

Like every year at about the same time, I received a small envelope of association of students and alumni of the ENS (now called "A 'Ulm" instead of "AAEENS" - Alumni Association of the ENS - which is a significant improvement from my point of view, and also includes the "friends" of the ENS that is to say those who have no direct link with us, but who would still support us by paying sub-sub). And like every year I ask myself the same question: to register or not to register?

The first year I was in school, I was tempted enough: first, because my mother was very enthusiastic ("Think about your mother, who adoooore her daughter to be in the same catalog that all these famous people, eh! Make me happy!"), then because I felt absolutely vehicle dynamics to include my corn in this register, the "ranking cities and departments." Finally, the registration form had to go in the trash with a ton and a half of unnecessary documentation that we circulated early in the first year, because when I thought about it, about six months later, she had mysteriously disappeared.

Then they are more ethical problems posed, still current today. I tell you right now, I do not like the side "we form a small club of insiders and elbows are used us, others may die". I'm not saying it is the mindset of "A" Ulm ", far from it, but it's still what it used to: I'm Normale Normale Bidule is also, I do not know him at all, but I'll use it to make me more or less piston. Personally, I am not at all in this kind of "social networking", but it is probably also a matter of family and social background.

Now I think it's great what this Association to help young (and old) in the ENS shit (because there are) or just give a financial boost to the projects (last year, the teachers of epigraphy and paleo they have managed to we reimburse the full travel joint study in Lyon). And of course, that if I ever get an email from a young person who would need help, I do pose any problem. But I will help and answer their questions, whether or not Normale: it will not change. I will even say: play on a pseudo-solidarity Normale would be the best way to walk to send and if I can help you, I will, no matter where you came from. That's works (or should work) meritocracy Republican and I agree to do all this thinking.

Finally, the final argument that is likely to carry the song, enrollment in Archicubier (directory of alumni, who are called "ArchiCube" once out of school) is also, in some ways a kind of proof that you are indeed Normale. Not that I feel the need to prove it (I do not care, I know I am and if you do not believe it, too bad for you), much less to proclaim ( I'm also not sure that is very strategic for a career in academia, even if it does not fit the stereotype of the arrogant and imbued Normale itself). But finally, it's still a way to acknowledge a fact.

And, after all, for me to do what I want, this inclusion in Archicubier, is not it?
